UPA-A is pleased to introduce the Automated Break-In (ABI) Machine, which will become the official break-in method for all 2027 UPA-A paddle certifications.
The Automated ABI Machine represents a significant advancement in paddle testing by delivering consistent, repeatable, and standardized break-in results. By automating the break-in process, the system removes the variability associated with manual testing, ensuring every paddle is subjected to the same controlled conditions prior to certification testing.
As paddle technology continues to evolve, repeatability and consistency are essential to maintaining a fair and objective certification process. The ABI Machine provides manufacturers with the utmost confidence that certified results accurately reflect a paddle’s performance after controlled break-in.
The complete Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the Automated ABI process is now available.
Manual ABI SOP Remains Available
The existing Manual ABI Standard Operating Procedure will remain published and available to manufacturers for research and development purposes. Many manufacturers utilize the manual procedure during product development to evaluate prototypes and better understand how paddles perform throughout their playable life.
While the automated system will be the official certification method beginning with the 2027 certification cycle, the manual SOP continues to serve as a valuable engineering tool for brands seeking to produce paddles that remain compliant throughout their expected lifespan.
UPA-A remains committed to providing manufacturers with transparent, objective, and scientifically repeatable testing methods that encourage innovation while ensuring fairness across the sport.
