Paddles
Certification Info
Along with Pickle Pro Labs, our independent testing lab, and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, who have extensive experience as the testing facility for Major League Baseball, UPA has established a best in class certification process for the professional sport of pickleball.
As the professional game continues to grow, both domestically and around the world, it is imperative that standards are established and manufacturers can design and build paddles that ensure a level playing field. But these paddle standards are more than just keeping speeds and spin in check, these standards are intended to improve the materials and building processes which will lead to better quality control and longer lifespans of paddles.
Certification Application
As of September 1 2025, UPA-A Certification will be required for all professional events under UPA. Professional UPA events include all PPA and MLP events for professionals, including PPA Challenger Series and PPA Pro Qualifiers.
The amateur competition will accept the UPA-A certification standards, but it is not mandatory for play as long as the paddle has USAP certification and on the USAP Approved Paddle List.
Paddle Rules
UPA-A has established rules and regulations for paddles and their performance. These rules and regulations will apply to all paddles used in professional UPA events, including but not limited to PPA Main Draws and Qualifiers, MLP, PPA Challenger events, PPA Asia, and PPA Australia.
Standard Operating Procedures for paddle performance and related tests are posted on the Pickle Pro Laboratories’ website
Approved Paddles
UPA-A has created a clear and thorough process to certify and approve paddles for professional pickleball. This ensures that all approved paddles meet quality and performance standards, helping to maintain fair play.
As the sport grows across the country and around the world, it’s important for paddle makers to follow set guidelines that keep the game competitive and consistent. The Approved Paddles page is a helpful resource for players, listing paddles that have passed testing and are approved for use in UPA-A events.
